Electroplating chemically adds a very thin layer of gold to the base material. The process involves physical vapor deposition of gold (PVD). According to Parker a microlaminated surface of 1.3 micrometer has a "service life" equivalent or exceeding that of a 10 micrometer gold plating.
But to reach a 93% visual accuracy compared to traditional gold plating, Parker uses a 3 micrometer layer of which 0.4 micrometer is 14K gold.
